About Moving Image

Moving Image is Wivenhoe’s community cinema, run by volunteers.

WHO RUNS IT?

Moving Image is the trading name for Wivenhoe Film Theatre, which is a limited company and registered charity.

Formalities and finances are looked after by the Trustees, currently chaired by Ginny Waters. The Treasurer is Martyn Gill and Moira Collett is the Company Secretary. The other Trustees are Sydney Bayley, Dilly Meyer and Michael Padmore.

A Working Group takes care of the day-to-day organisation, and its members are the six Trustees plus Vivienne Goldsmith, Maryline Kaeblen and Mary Tyler. The Working Group normally meets every two months.

WHAT DO VOLUNTEERS DO?

There is a group of volunteers who, in addition to the members of the Working Group, take on the various tasks needed for each screening. The main duties, apart from setting up the hall, include projection (full training given), acting as usher and selling tickets, memberships and refreshments, and then also putting everything away after the film. There is a rota of volunteers for each film – volunteers say which dates they can do and a rota is put together for a couple of months at a time so that people can plan ahead. A volunteer has a free pass for any film they help with.

HOW ARE THE FILMS CHOSEN?

The programme is put together by the Working Group, two to three months in advance. The aim is to have a programme which offers a variety of genres, chosen from the latest films that have become available to be shown outside commercial cinemas. Collecting audience feedback means we have a sound basis for choosing films that are likely to attract a good size audience and be well received. A licence has to be obtained from the distributor for each film – the cost varies from about £90 to £160 for a single screening. It is usually about three months after a film is shown in cinemas before a licence is available.
