Unusually, Gillian Flynn has adapted her own global bestseller novel and written the screenplay for this film.  For anybody who has not read the book, it is the story of a modern marriage full of secrets and darkness.  On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his beautiful wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble.  Soon he is suspected of murdering her but that would be too simple. The narrative is full of twists and turns that take us into ‘wild transgressive territory that Pedro Almodovar might envy’.  It is a hugely enjoyable watch.

It is directed by David Fincher whose record with thrillers of this kind is second to none: Se7en, Zodiac and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  Rosamund Pike makes a second appearance in our season, in a very different part, demonstrating her versatility as an actress.  Apart from Pike and Ben Affleck, the film is full of good performances, Neil Patrick Harris as Desi Collings, a creepy, rich mama’s boy and onetime pursuer of Amy who turns up at the search centre, Tyler Perry as a slick lawyer, who advises Nick on his media appearances by flicking jelly sweets at him when he gets things wrong, and Carrie Coon as Nick’s sane, stalwart rock of a sister Margo.
