The Falling

The film is directed by Carol Morley and is set in an English girls’ school in 1969.  It is the era of the new permissiveness that the girls allude to, exploring their sexuality, while their parents and teachers are stuck in a more conservative Britain.  One of the girls, Lydia, starts to have fainting fits and it soon becomes an epidemic.  Is it hysteria or some collective rebellious action, in protest against the expectations that the adults have for their future?  It has been described as ‘dizzying, courageous, utterly humane and slightly unhinged’.

The film does not resemble a sixties’ British film and has something of a French look.  The cinematographer is the French Agnès Godard, who is celebrated for her work with Claire Denis and Agnès Varda, two of the outstanding women directors of the last fifty years, and films typical British locations in an offbeat fashion.

The film received two nominations at the 2014 London Film Festival, one for Carol Morley, as Director, and one for Florence Pugh, as Best Newcomer.
