The Salt of the Earth
The Salt of the Earth, directed by Juliano Ribeiro Salgado and Wim Wenders, is a visually stunning and frequently moving tribute from one artist to another. It is a documentary reflecting on the life of Brazilian-born photographer Sebastiao Salgado, who has spent forty years travelling the world and bearing witness to the sometimes gruelling lives of its people, but also to their resilience in resisting the planet’s destruction.
Mark Kermode says that ‘Salgado proves an adept and compassionate storyteller, his training as an economist providing sociopolitical insight into the suffering (manmade rather than natural) that threatens to engulf his work.’
The film was nominated for the Best Documentary award in the 2015 Oscars.
