In a world difficult to comprehend, Nathan struggles to connect with those around him – most of all his loving mother – but finds comfort in numbers. When Nathan is taken under the wing of unconventional and anarchic teacher, Mr. Humphreys, the pair forge an unusual friendship and Nathan’s talents win him a place on the UK team at the International Mathematics Olympiad. From suburban England to bustling Taipei and back again, Nathan builds complex relationships as he is confronted by the irrational nature of love.

Kenneth Turan, of the Los Angeles Times, describes the film as something more than a ‘coming of age narrative’.  What he likes about the film is that it doesn’t compromise with how awkward and edgy and difficult to get on with the characters are.  ‘The burdens of being different are among the dramas that A Brilliant Young Mind gracefully unfolds’.

The film was inspired by one of the director Morgan Matthews’ most successful documentaries, “Beautiful Young Minds,” which followed a group of British students set to participate in the International Mathematics Olympiad.  It is his dramatic debut.

The film won Best Film at the 2014 Palm Beach International Festival and the actors Asa Butterfield, Sally Hawkins and Rafe Spall were all nominated at the 2014 British Independent Film Awards.
