Ace The Zombie

“It has been many years since the first zombie outbreaks and the World Health Organization has introduced a ‘miracle’ drug called Zom-Calm. While not exactly a cure, it curbs the undead appetite for living flesh, and zombies now occupy almost twenty percent of the national work force.”

A military experiment gone horribly wrong… a zombie apocalypse… then ZOM-CALM! A revolutionary drug from the World Health Organization. Allen Christopher Edwards, our unlikely hero, gets taken advantage of by everyone from his boss and co-workers to his girlfriend Brenda… until one fateful afternoon. When Ace is bitten and subsequently captured by the Zombie Control Force he learns of a secret plot by the evil Keeper Ellis to rid the world of all zombies. Can you cure death? Will Undead Americans ever be granted equal rights? The lives of all American undead, and the fate of entire world, depends on one man: Ace The Zombie.”

Before Dawn

An estranged couple’s vacation to save their troubled relationship goes awry when they find themselves under attack from the walking dead.

“What Before Dawn has managed to do is give a well needed dose of life and energy into a sub-genre which has been faltering somewhat of late. The tone, pace and aesthetic of the film are all marvellous. The relationship between Alex and Meg is so engrossing and believable that it draws you right in. This is very much an examination of human interaction, in which the zombie apocalypse just so happens to be occurring in the background.

The pathos which is generated by the shambling, partially alcoholic Alex is a stark contrast to the energetic and productive Meg; however, an emptiness exists in them both, cleverly accentuated by sharp, penetrating dialogue. The subtle jibes which they make at each other, even in the midst of kind gestures will ring true to anyone whose relationship has passed the point of no return. Alex’s strained interactions with this mother in law are also particularly well written and delivered.

Nicky Evans’ Alex is one of the finest examples of survivalist character to appear in many years. He manages to generate both suspicion and empathy simultaneously, his appearance climaxing in a particularly effecting manner.

This is not to categorise the film as a kitchen sink drama with zombies either, for that would be an injustice. It is merely the fact that the richness and depth of the characters on screen generates a connection that is rarely seen in genre features. A marvellous combination of astute filmmaking and deft knowledge of the horror film, Before Dawn is a film which warrants multiple viewings to allow the multitude of subtleties to sink in.

Where the film really succeeds is that it delivers on the gore front as well. The zombies are of a new ilk, one which manages to create a new strain of terror, just when we thought we’d seen it all. Their stripped, shorn faces, accentuated by blood red eyes and frantic lunges become terrifying and we begin to feel as edgy as the characters within the piece.

Before Dawn is a rare treat, an intelligent genre piece which has so much to offer. The performances are a testament to all involved and certainly one of the most talked about movies at Grimmfest. If there is any justice in the, this movie will take pride of place in any discerning horror fans collection. I can only hope that this is merely the first that we’ve seen of Dominic Brunt and Joanne Mitchell. ”

The Passion of the Christ is a 2004 film co-written, co-produced and directed by Mel Gibson. It is based on the New Testament accounts of the arrest, trial, torture, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus, events commonly known as The Passion. The film’s dialogue is in Aramaic, Latin, and Hebrew, with subtitles. It is the highest grossing non-English language film and the most successful R-rated film in the United States.

“A depiction of the last twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, on the day of his crucifixion in Jerusalem. The story opens in the Garden of Olives where Jesus has gone to pray after the Last Supper. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, the controversial Jesus–who has performed ‘miracles’ and has publicly announced that he is ‘the Son of God’–is arrested and taken back within the city walls of Jerusalem. There, the leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy; subsequently, his trial results with the leaders condemning him to his death. Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of Palestine, for his sentencing. Pilate listens to the accusations leveled at Jesus by the Pharisees. Realizing that his own decision will cause him to become embroiled in a political conflict, Pilate defers to King Herod in deciding the matter of how to persecute Jesus. However, Herod returns Jesus to Pilate who, in turn, gives the crowd a choice between which prisoner …” (IMBD Review)

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to fill out the recent Moving Image audience surveys. These have given us a lot to think about and some interesting suggestions for programming and activities. The collated results of the survey will be put together into an informal report which will be available on the website in the first week of April.

We have also done the prize draw and the winner, who will receive a set of complimentary tickets, will be announced in a mailout this week.

It’s very important that we get feedback of all kinds, not just from things like a formal survey but also through casual conversations in the street and as comments at screenings, in emails, Twitter and Facebook… Moving Image is a community cinema and the views of audiences and volunteers are a vital part of what makes it all work… so please keep talking!

Over the last year and a half we have shown getting on for twenty family features, mostly on Sunday afternoons and with the occasional outdoor screening. What sort of family films would be most popular with Wivenhoe audiences? And what age groups do you think we should target: films for really little ones (under 5′s), ages five to ten, young teenagers etc? What new films should we be lining up next? We want to know what you and your family think so send us an email or add your comments to the quick survey (download and print or complete online). And remember you could win £30 worth of free tickets just by completing the survey (so don’t forget to add your name and phone number or email of course!).

CELEBRATING THE BEST OF INDEPENDENT CINEMA,
BOLLYWOOD & BEYOND

Here’s a post from the Asian Film Festival in London mid to late March:

“We are delighted to confirm the dates of the 14th London Asian Film Festival, as 16 to 24 March 2012. Put those dates in your diary because we’ve got some great films and events lined up. We are very excited about our festival programme this year and here are some highlights.”

“We’re kicking off the festival at BFI with a fantastic opening night film, the psychological drama Michael, starring Naseeruddin Shah, on 16 March.”

“Michael Winterbottom’s Trishna will be at Apollo Piccadilly, on Saturday 17 March and it is very likely that Frieda Pinto will be attending to do a Q&A.”

“Our annual short film competition will take place on 17 March at Apollo Piccadilly. As always this feature in our festival showcases brilliant emerging film makers and future stars of cinema. We’re delighted to also be screening Lucky, a feature film borne out of a short film by Avie Luthra which we screened a few years ago.”

“We are thrilled about our Pakistani film section this year and will be screening the highly controversial film Bol on 18 March, again at BFI. The gorgeous lead actress Humaima Malik is confirmed as attending to do a Q&A.”

“We’re also privileged to have Meherjaan from Bangladesh which will be screened on the 19th of March at Apollo. This film was a project across Pakistan, India and Bangladesh starring Jaya Bachchan. We will have the honour of having the director Rubaiyat Hossain with us for a Q&A after the screening.”

“In this year of the Paralympics, we’re very excited to have invited director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who will be here on 21 March until the closing night awards ceremony on 24 March at BAFTA. TOF will be giving him an award in recognition of his work on disability in film. Sanjay will also be delivering the Nargis Dutt lecture at the University of Westminster (Regent Street campus) on 22 March and we will be screening critically acclaimed films Black and Guzaarish during the ten day event.”

“Renowned scriptwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar will be here from 22 March, doing a music/song writing workshop over two days with up coming musical talent and then he will be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the closing night awards ceremony at BAFTA.”

“The closing night awards ceremony will be at BAFTA on 24 March. The gala ceremony itself will be in the theatre upstairs, followed by a black tie sit down meal in the David Lean room.”
All the festival details are on our website www.tonguesonfire.com .
