Much Ado About Nothing was very widely seen by many of the top critics in the USA as one of the best films of 2013.  A O Scott, of the New York Times, gave it five stars and said that Joss Whedon, the director, ‘draws out the essential screwball nature of Shakespeare’s comedy’.  It won a USA National Board of Review award as one of the top ten independent films of 2013.

The British critics have been no less enthusiastic, with Catherine Shoard, of the Guardian, heralding it as ‘the first great contemporary Shakespeare since Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet’ and Philip French, of the Observer, warming to ‘its charm, intelligence and good humour’.

What is remarkable is that it was shot in black and white, in Whedon’s home, to a twelve day schedule, in modern dress.  He has not revealed his budget but it must have been quite low.
