This film has been hailed by critics for its performances, in particular by Tilda Swinton, who is largely mute, and Ralph Fiennes, who demonstrates again his gift for comedy.  Robbie Collin describes him as ‘simply magnificent, a rapturous alpha-prat who swans around with his linen shirts unbuttoned to the navel, recounts past recording-studio war stories ad nauseum and elevates dad-dancing to performance art’.

Rock legend Marianne Lane (Tilda Swinton) is recuperating on the volcanic island of Pantelleria with her partner Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) when iconoclast record producer and old flame Harry (Ralph Fiennes) unexpectedly arrives with his daughter Penelope (Dakota Johnson) and interrupts their holiday, bringing with him an A-bomb blast of nostalgia from which there can be no rescue.  A Bigger Splash is a sensuous portrait of desire, jealousy and rock and roll, under the Mediterranean sun.

This is a remake/update of La Piscine, Jacques Deray’s hothouse psychosexual drama from 1969, featuring Alain Delon and his former girlfriend Romy Schneider, as well as Jane Birkin and Maurice Ronet.  The original’s setting of Riviera high-life, with fatal attractions, is transposed to the far less sophisticated milieu of Pantelleria, an island south of Sicily which still proudly shows its roots with Catholic saint-day festivals and artisanal ricotta-making.
