This film is also rated by the Guardian as one of the best films this year. Of all the four films we have shown so far it is the one that has divided the critics the most but audiences, according to Rotten Tomatoes, love it. It is the extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black. Told from Amy’s perspective and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film follows the remarkable woman behind the phenomenon and the tumultuous relationship at the centre of one of the most legendary albums of all time. Amy is played by Marisa Abela and Eddie Marsan plays her father Mitch, who comes across as a more likeable person than he seemed in Asif Kapadia’s 2015 documentary, Amy.

Those who like it feel that Back to Black is a soulful and sensitive portrait of a true artist bristling with energy and imbued with real affection for its subject. So much affection that the filmmakers may have gone out of their way to pull a few punches in order to enshrine a legend rather than overburdening the audience with some harsher realities about the darker side of fame and addiction. The director Sam Taylor-Wood herself has said that after over two years of research, and reading so much of the tabloid coverage, she wanted to go back to the music.
