Film Spirit Awards

This is a film that is hard to describe.  It is famous for looking as if it was filmed in one take although this is not strictly true and there are around four breaks which are hard to spot.  It was filmed backstage in a New York Theatre and on the streets in New York.  It is a film about acting, which is perhaps why the Hollywood community loved it.  It is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor, Michael Keaton, famous for portraying an iconic superhero, as he struggles to mount a Broadway play.  In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself. Christy Lemire says it is ‘a film that’s both technically astounding yet emotionally rich, intimate yet enormous, biting yet warm, satirical yet sweet’.  It is full of slightly over-the-top, self-mocking performances, Michael Keaton as an actor trying to resurrect his career and Edward Norton as another who is difficult and demanding.  Emma Stone is very good as Keaton’s daughter.  As a whole, it’s original and highly entertaining.

The film won the Oscar for Best Film and has won lots of other awards for Cinematography and Best Screenplay.  Michael Keaton won the Golden Globe for Best Actor.
