Decision to Leave has been hailed as one of the very best films of 2022 (Guardian, at 10th in its top 50, and 13th for the British Film Institute). The director, Park Chan-wook won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. It is a noirish murder mystery, with a classic femme fatale, and a story of romantic obsession. From a mountain peak in South Korea, a man plummets to his death. Did he jump, or was he pushed? When detective Hae-joon arrives on the scene, he begins to suspect the dead man’s wife Seo-rae. But as he digs deeper into the investigation, he finds himself trapped in a web of deception and desire.

It is absorbing and enigmatic, and there is a near-hypnotic rhythm to its editing style. Although this is a story of murder and death, it is also one of tenderness. Park is far more interested in the pain of the living than those who are dead and buried. He certifies with this splendid film an uncomfortable truth: the purest form of romance is the kind that guarantees the impossibility of consummating that love.
