Emily is an imagining of the Gothic story of Emily Brontë’s young life, which might have inspired her seminal novel, Wuthering Heights . Haunted by the death of her mother, Emily struggles within the confines of her family life and yearns for artistic and personal freedom, and so begins a journey to channel her creative potential into one of the greatest novels of all time. Emma Mackey, who plays Emily, has just won the BAFTA Rising Star award and the whole cast had a Best Ensemble Performance nomination at the British Independent Film Awards.

The imagining is by actress/writer/director Frances O’Connor, whose first feature this is. Having starred in Patricia Rozema’s daring adaptation of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park in 1999, O’Connor knows the rules of the period drama well enough to break them. Though it takes a liberal approach to biography, it’s so attuned to Emily’s creative spirit that it’s not implausible that this is how the author might have chosen to envision her own life if given the chance. Emily captures the soul of the artist, if not her reality.
