This film is not a straightforward documentary except in that it is a broadly chronological tale of Bowie’s life. It is better described as a cinematic odyssey exploring Bowie’s creative, spiritual and musical journey. From the visionary mind of Brett Morgen, Moonage Daydream features captivating, never-before-seen footage and performances spanning David Bowie’s 54-year career. The film includes 40 exclusively remastered Bowie songs and is the first film ever sanctioned by the Bowie Estate, with local access to the artists’ archives. It was nominated for two awards at the Cannes Film Festival and has a BAFTA nomination for Best Documentary.

The unusual approach creates more of “a David Bowie experience” than a movie which, for many fans will be much more valuable than another look at some famous guy being unhappy at school, signing a deal, writing some songs, defying gender standards—all the usual biopic stuff. The greatest compliment to it is to say that it feels and looks like a film that Bowie might have made himself: extraordinary and not like any other musical documentary.
