This is one to see for the most original performance by an actor that you will have seen for a long time. Emma Stone won the full hand of Best Actress awards at the Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globes for her utterly brilliant turn as a baby-woman who goes on her own journey of self-discovery through a steam-punk version of Victorian England and Europe. It is a Frankenstein story, with many twists and a more positive outcome. The film is a visual treat and won Oscars for Makeup and Hairstyling, Costume Design and Production Design. Sight and Sound (magazine of the British Film Institute) made it the 4th best film of 2023.

The film tells the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation. Her appetite for novelty is reflected in film-making that evokes a similar sense of wonder and discovery in the audience. Poor Things is not only an expressive meal for the mind, it’s also one of the most spectacularly beautiful and visually imaginative films you will ever have seen.
