She Said has won multiple nominations, particularly for its screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, but also for the acting and the New York Film Critics made it one of the films of last year. It stars Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan as two New York Times journalists who, with the support of their editor, played by Patricia Clarkson, go in dogged pursuit of women who would be willing to testify against the sexual criminal, Harvey Weinstein. This is not the kind of heroic odyssey that we are used to in films of this kind (All The President’s Men, for example) but it is rooted in the struggle these two journalists have in balancing their home and work lives.

Maria Schrader’s taut drama feels as exhaustive and thorough as it’s possible to be, given that the full extent of the producer’s crimes remains unknown. This sobering procedural follows the tenacious work by the two women, a war of attrition against the fear and power structures that contained the truth about Weinstein for so long. Both Mulligan and Kazan are excellent, but equally impressive are a series of supporting turns from Samantha Morton, Jennifer Ehle and – playing herself in a wrenching scene – Ashley Judd. Schrader’s sensitive, unshowy approach to the directing choices is a smart decision; this is a film that is respectful of and in service to the stories of the women.
