This is the film that received 8 Golden Globe Award nominations and won a Best Film award as well as Best Actor for Colin Farrell’s performance. It had 10 BAFTA nominations, and won Outstanding British Film and Best Original Screenplay, as well as two Supporting Actor awards for Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan, and 10 Oscar nominations, including for Best Film and for all the four main actors. The two lead actors are Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, who starred together in In Bruges, another left field McDonagh comedy from 2008. You will probably remember McDonagh’s last film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which was a huge hit and shown by Moving Image in 2017. He’s a very talented writer who started in the theatre but has made a huge contribution to the movies more recently.

Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, The Banshees of Inisherin follows lifelong friends Pádraic and Colm, who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Pádraic, aided by his sister Siobhán and troubled young islander Dominic, endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Pádraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences. The Banshees of Inisherin is enchanting, poignant, and relentlessly entertaining while leaving one with the inspiration to redefine what constitutes a real friendship and those that are simply associates for a season.
