Under the Skin

This film is truly original and you will not have seen anything like it before.  It is loosely adapted from the 2000 novel by Michael Faber, which was the second Wivenhoe Bookclub book.  The gorgeously glamorous Scarlett Johansson plays an alien who is driving around the streets of Glasgow in a Ford Transit, picking up men, apparently for sex, until it becomes evident that she has another purpose in mind.  The story becomes more complicated when she has an encounter with a man with facial disfigurement and she becomes vulnerable and conscious of her otherness.  Ultimately, she becomes a victim too.

The film has been described as a masterpiece.  The director, Jonathan Glazer, made Sexy Beast and Birth but has not made a film for ten years; this one was a long time in the preparation and it has paid off.
