We have shown some very serious and thought-provoking films this season. Here is one that is a little different, as we move towards the holiday season: a British film, with a stellar cast doing what they do best, playing as an ensemble to tell a story in a highly amusing and enjoyable way. Written by Jonny Sweet and directed by Thea Sharrock (the director of the wonderful The Hollow Crown, which was on TV a few years ago), it is based on a real case of poison-pen missives shocking the Sussex seaside town of Littlehampton in the 1920s.

It follows two neighbors: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women, led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan of the marvellous sitcom We Are Lady Parts), begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all. Also in the cast are Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, Joanna Scanlan, Eileen Atkins, Jason Atkins and Hugh Skinner, all acting their socks off.
