Reel Appeal continues to search for a long-term venue to call home, but meanwhile our immediate project is to get screenings underway. Moving Image is the name of the new film society we have set up to organise this aspect of the project and we can now share with you our plans to show an autumn season of films in not one but two local venues:
Starting in October, we will be presenting regular Saturday night screenings at the Phillip Road Centre in Wivenhoe. We open our public season with the acclaimed ‘Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll’ on Saturday the 2nd of October, followed by ‘Micmacs’ on the 9th of October. ‘Kick-Ass’ will be showing on Saturday 16th October. Tickets are available on the door for all Phillip Rd screenings.
We will also be holding occasional Sunday afternoon screenings intended for family viewing. To enhance the facilities at Phillip Road we have purchased a large, high quality cinema screen , tailor-made blackout blinds and a rather special portable box office. Initially at Phillip Road we will use digital projectors and a sound system loaned from the University. In due course we will buy our own projection equipment once we have established our programme of screenings.
In addition we have been given a slot on an experimental basis in the University’s Lakeside Theatre which has excellent facilities. At the Lakeside we will be showing films on alternate Monday evenings during the Autumn term. Our chosen theme for the seven screenings is ‘Inside the Criminal/Outside the Law’ starting on the 11th October with the award-winning Italian film ‘Gomorra’, followed by the modern French gangster film ‘The Beat My Heart Skipped’ on the 25th October.
Detailed programmes for both venues are now available. Or why not add your name to the free mailing list now. Remember that you don’t have to become a full member to receive the regular newsletters (but we think membership is worth it because you immediately save a pound each time you watch a film, plus you get priority for special events and members-only screenings!). For more details of the benefits see the Membership page.
